About 9/16″ Bob Stocksdale Gouge – CPM10V
9/16″ Bob Stocksdale Gouge
In honor of Bob Stocksdale and Jerry Glaser, we are proud to offer one of Jerry’s most respected designs—crafted today using an exceptional modern tool steel for unmatched durability and performance.
A Legacy Tool
Jerry Glaser introduced the Stocksdale Gouge in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The original tools featured Goncalo Alves handles with stainless steel ferrules and were made from M4 high-speed steel, which offered twice the wear resistance of traditional M2 steels.
But the story goes back even further.
Jerry produced the first high-speed steel gouge for Bob Stocksdale around 1960, at a time when most turning tools were still made from high-carbon steel.
As woodturner J. Paul Fennell wrote:
“In my opinion, Glaser single-handedly changed the woodturning world with his introduction of HSS tools.”
— J. Paul Fennell, 2009
Modern Performance
This tool is now produced using an advanced steel designed for extreme wear resistance and long tool life, with more vanadium carbides than CPM-10V.
Jerry Glaser became renowned for developing the correct flute geometry, mass, and balance required for demanding turning operations. Today, each flute is precision-ground on state-of-the-art CNC grinding machines, then hardened and cryogenically tempered—a process Jerry began using in 1995.
The tools are also treated with our proprietary Surface Compacting Technology, which refines the steel surface and produces a micro-burr structure that enhances cutting performance.
Construction
• Precision-ground flute geometry
• Cryogenically treated tool steel
• Surface Compacting Technology for improved cutting edges
• Handles filled with Vibration Dampening Gel (VDG)
• Assembled on a 14″ Glaser Hitec handle
